Ordering an IFRS 16 exception queue without losing the afternoon
When a lease accounting audit app drops thirty warnings at 9:10, the temptation is alphabetical clearance. Resist it. Cash impact and assertion risk should set the order, not the UI sort default.
Start with silent gaps
Before touching flagged lines, confirm the extract is complete. Missing sites, vehicles, or renewal options create false comfort when the visible queue looks tidy. A five-minute completeness check saves hours of late rework.
Cash-first, then judgement-heavy
Next, clear items that move liability or expense by more than your desk’s trivial threshold. Only then move to classification debates and disclosure wording. Cosmetic date mismatches can wait — unless they hide a modification.
Write the order into the file
